The Ambassadors of Guinea and Sierra Leone to the People’s Republic of China have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and advancing cooperation within the Mano River Union (MRU).
The Guinean Ambassador to China paid a courtesy visit to his Sierra Leonean counterpart, His Excellency Ambassador Abu Bakarr Karim, at the Sierra Leone Embassy in Beijing this week.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the two diplomats to reaffirm the longstanding historical, cultural and political ties between Guinea and Sierra Leone, as well as their shared commitment to regional integration.
Ambassador Karim warmly welcomed the Guinean envoy and congratulated him on his recent appointment. He also conveyed Sierra Leone’s sympathies to the people and Government of Guinea following the recent tragic mudslide disaster in the country.
“Whatever affects Guinea affects Sierra Leone,” Ambassador Karim said, stressing the close ties between the two neighbouring countries.
He described Guinea and Sierra Leone as more than neighbours, noting that both countries are connected by shared history, culture and common interests.
The Guinean Ambassador reciprocated the sentiments, observing that the similarities in names, traditions and cultural practices between the two countries reflect the deep-rooted relationship between their peoples.
He further expressed interest in benefiting from Ambassador Karim’s experience in Beijing, particularly in navigating China’s political, economic and diplomatic environment.
The two diplomats also discussed practical measures to strengthen cooperation under the Mano River Union, which comprises Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire.
They agreed on the need for greater collaboration in identifying, developing and securing projects capable of accelerating economic growth and development across the sub-region.
Key areas discussed included cross-border trade, infrastructure connectivity, youth employment, food security, energy access, climate-related challenges and public health.
Ambassador Karim stressed the importance of regional unity in addressing common challenges and advancing the collective interests of MRU member states.
“We must work in unison. The strength of our region lies in the unity of its members. When one of us progresses, we all progress,” he said.
The Guinean Ambassador expressed his country’s willingness to work closely with Sierra Leone through bilateral and multilateral platforms in China to attract investment, technical assistance and development support for projects benefiting the MRU region.
The meeting also underscored the growing role of African diplomatic missions in Beijing in promoting intra-African cooperation and presenting a coordinated position when engaging Chinese institutions, investors and development partners.
The two envoys concluded the meeting with a commitment to maintain regular consultations and promote initiatives aimed at translating diplomatic relations into tangible development benefits for citizens across the Mano River region.
