Former Southampton and Royal Antwerp forward Victor Udoh has died at the age of 21, his former club Royal Antwerp confirmed on 4 September 2026.

Udoh passed away in Abuja on 3 September after suspected food poisoning while on holiday in Nigeria, according to a statement released by the Belgian club.

“Royal Antwerp FC learned with deep sadness of the passing of Victor Udoh. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time,” the club said.

Udoh joined Royal Antwerp’s youth setup in 2022 after spending time in Southampton’s academy. The Nigerian attacker made several appearances for Antwerp’s U21 side and was regarded within the club as a promising young forward with pace and technical ability.

Born in Nigeria, Udoh moved to England as a teenager to develop at Southampton’s academy before continuing his career in Belgium. He had returned to Nigeria for the holiday period when he fell ill.

No official cause of death has been confirmed pending medical reports, but the club cited suspected food poisoning as the circumstances surrounding his passing.

Tributes have been posted by former teammates and clubs across Europe. Southampton FC said it was “deeply saddened” by the news and extended condolences to Udoh’s family.

Udoh had not made a senior appearance for Royal Antwerp’s first team but was considered part of the club’s development pathway. He left Antwerp in 2024 to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

The Nigerian Football Federation has not yet issued a public statement.

Royal Antwerp said it would provide support to Udoh’s family and requested privacy be respected during the mourning period.

Udoh is the latest in a series of young footballers to die suddenly while abroad, bringing renewed attention to player welfare and medical support for athletes traveling internationally.
