Her Excellency Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, Sierra Leone’s First Lady, has praised the Sixth Parliament for its unwavering support of women’s empowerment as she was officially celebrated for her recent election as President of the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLD).

Speaking at the State Hall of Parliament on Thursday, April 3, 2025, Dr. Bio expressed her deep appreciation for the symbolic recognition, describing it as a reflection of national unity in advancing gender equity. She commended Parliament’s “HeForShe” spirit and specifically recognized the Majority Leader of Government Business, Hon. Mathew Sahr Nyuma, and the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, for putting aside political differences in support of women’s advancement.

Dr. Bio, who secured the OAFLD presidency with a landslide victory in Addis Ababa, acknowledged the overwhelming support from various female groups, mami queens, paramount chiefs, and government officials. She also paid special tribute to serving ministers, the SLPP Chairman, and the Parliamentary Female Caucus, commending their commitment to empowering women and girls.

“This celebration is possible because one woman chose to uplift another,” she said, commending Madam Isata Jabbe Kabba for organizing the event and referring to Dr. Sylvia Blyden as “a sister from another mother.” She also extended her gratitude to Anti-Corruption Commissioner Francis Ben Kaifala for his consistent support to her and the government.

In her address, the First Lady emphasized that no previous administration has invested as significantly in women and girls as President Julius Maada Bio’s government. She urged parents and leaders to prioritize the protection and development of children for the future of Sierra Leone.

The event, jointly organized by the Parliamentary Female Caucus and the Office of the Gender Advisor at State House, attracted dignitaries from across the country.

Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, described Dr. Fatima Bio as unmatched in global advocacy, while Clerk of Parliament, Hon. Paran Umar Tarawally, stated that her election as OAFLD President is a win for all Sierra Leoneans. Hon. Wuyatta Batilo Songa, President of the Female Parliamentary Caucus, praised the First Lady’s eloquence, strength, and leadership.

The program was moderated by SLBC Director General Josephine Kamara and Sheku Lamin Turay of Parliament’s Public Relations Department.
