In a significant move to boost agricultural productivity, the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, officially launched a private sector-led mechanization initiative in Kono District on April 4, 2025. The project aims to revolutionize farming practices by introducing modern machinery and tools to local farmers.

The initiative, spearheaded by agribusiness entrepreneur Madam Siita Kaikai, introduces six tractors and a full set of modern farming implements to Kono. This bold investment is expected to enhance farming efficiency and establish a sustainable, scalable model for mechanized agriculture in the region.

This project aligns with President Julius Maada Bio’s national Feed Salone campaign, which encourages private sector involvement in transforming Sierra Leone’s food systems. Madam Kaikai’s investment is a significant step toward realizing this vision.

During his visit, Minister Kpaka praised Madam Kaikai for her leadership and initiative. He described the investment as timely and well-aligned with government strategies to expand mechanization nationwide. Additionally, he emphasized that such private sector-led models could pave the way for government-backed credit facilities, encouraging even more investment in agricultural equipment.

In addition to the mechanization launch, the Minister addressed the development of livestock in the region. Recognizing its importance to rural livelihoods, he announced that the Cabinet had recently approved the National Cattle Settlement Policy. This policy aims to reduce conflicts between farmers and herders, a long-standing issue in many farming communities.

Dr. Kpaka also revealed the forthcoming $105 million Livestock and Livelihood Development Project, which will significantly boost the livestock sector. Kono will play a central role in its implementation, further reinforcing the district’s growing importance in the national agricultural agenda.
