Falaba District has taken a major step toward youth empowerment and sustainable livelihoods with the signing of contract agreements with 10 local vocational skills training providers to train 140 young people across the district.

The agreements, facilitated by the Global Youth Network for Empowerment & Development (GYNED) and supported by the European Union through Christian Aid Ireland under the YouLead Project, were signed at the Falaba District Council Conference Room.

Officials said the selected providers will deliver market-relevant vocational training in areas such as tailoring, catering, carpentry, welding, and information and communication technology (ICT). The one-year programme is scheduled to commence in April.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Executive Director of GYNED described the initiative as a “critical intervention” aimed at addressing unemployment and poverty among vulnerable youths in remote communities. He emphasized that the programme is designed not only to provide practical skills but also to enhance self-reliance and economic independence.

He further explained that training providers will receive capacity-building support to strengthen their delivery service and ensure quality outcomes throughout the programme.

Representatives from the Falaba District Council and the Falaba District Youth Council, who co-signed the agreements as guarantors, emphasized the importance of local ownership in development initiatives. They noted that their involvement will ensure transparency, accountability, and effective monitoring of the programme.

“This initiative will directly impact young people in hard-to-reach communities and provide them with opportunities to build sustainable livelihoods,” a council representative said, adding that the district remains committed to supporting youth-focused interventions.

GYNED expressed appreciation to the European Union and Christian Aid Ireland for their continued support of youth development and inclusive growth in Sierra Leone. However, the organization noted that demand for such programmes remains high and called on other development partners to expand access to skills training for underserved youths nationwide.

The YouLead Project forms part of broader efforts to tackle youth unemployment by equipping young people with demand-driven skills and promoting inclusive economic participation.
