Sierra Leone’s Environment Protection Agency (EPA-SL), under the leadership of Dr. Abu Bakar S Massaquoi, has launched an online portal to monitor the implementation of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) across sectors. This move aims to enhance transparency and accountability in climate action, aligning with Sierra Leone’s updated NDC submitted to the UNFCCC in 2021.

Supported by the Capacity-Building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT) project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the online platform will track key areas such as adaptation, mitigation, loss, damage, and support received.

A recent training session held in Bo district saw the participation of data providers and validators from various sectors. Nella Interactive, an IT firm from Accra, Ghana, provided essential training to empower users to navigate the platform effectively.

Presentations during the training covered crucial topics such as the Paris Agreement, NDC progress, GHG inventory development, and Sierra Leone’s updated NDC. Speakers emphasized the platform’s role in fostering collaboration among Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) and gathering feedback for continuous improvement.

Sierra Leone’s commitment to leveraging technology for climate action and meeting international obligations is evident in the successful implementation of the NDC online portal. This initiative promotes transparency, facilitates data-driven decision-making, and lays a foundation for coordinated efforts to build resilience and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Future developments and enhancements to the portal will be communicated to stakeholders, reflecting the government’s dedication to promoting sustainable development and climate resilience. Through collaboration and knowledge sharing, Sierra Leone aims to make meaningful strides towards a more sustainable future.
