The World Cup quarter-finals delivered drama on Friday as England and Argentina both booked semi-final spots – but in very different fashion.
England came from behind to defeat Norway 2-1 after extra time at Miami Stadium on July 11th, reaching the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1990.
Norway took the lead in the first half, but England hit back before the break to level at 1-1. The game stayed locked at 1-1 through regulation before England found a winner in extra time to seal a 2-1 victory.
It was a tense night in Miami with both sides finishing level after 90 minutes before England’s late push broke Norwegian hearts.
Defending champions Argentina struggled but did enough to see off Switzerland 3-1 after extra time in Kansas City on July 11th.
Switzerland opened the scoring in the first half, but Argentina equalized in the second to force 1-1 at full time. In extra time the World Cup holders turned on the power, netting twice to pull away and secure a 3-1 win.
The result keeps Argentina’s bid to defend their title alive, though they were made to work hard by a resilient Swiss side.
England and Argentina both advance to the semi-finals, joining France who beat Morocco 2-0 on Thursday. The final four will be completed after the remaining quarter-final.
