Education leaders from Port Loko, Falaba and Pujehun districts have gathered in Port Loko for the District of Excellence 2026 Summer Showcase, an event focused on celebrating achievements, sharing innovations and addressing challenges within Sierra Leone’s education sector.
The showcase brought together government officials, development partners, education practitioners and district representatives to highlight how effective local leadership is contributing to stronger education systems and improved learning outcomes for children.
Organised with support from EducAid Sierra Leone and the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), the forum provided district education teams with an opportunity to present progress made over the past year while identifying areas requiring further support and investment.
Discussions centred on key issues affecting schools at the district level, including teacher development, availability of learning materials, community engagement and the use of education data to monitor student performance. District representatives also shared examples of innovative approaches in teaching and learning, particularly in improving literacy, numeracy and school retention, with emphasis on keeping more girls in school.
Participants stressed that sustainable improvements in education require strong collaboration among central government, local authorities, communities and development partners. The event was described as a platform not only to celebrate achievements but also to reflect on challenges and identify practical solutions for continued progress.
Speaking during the showcase, organizers highlighted the importance of ensuring that every child has access to quality education and the opportunity to learn, grow and succeed.
“It was inspiring to hear directly from education leaders about the challenges, achievements and innovations emerging from Port Loko, Falaba and Pujehun,” organizers said. “The District of Excellence 2026 Summer Showcase brought together government, partners and practitioners to celebrate progress, share lessons and explore how strong local leadership can continue to strengthen education systems and improve learning outcomes for children.”
Representatives from the United Kingdom in Sierra Leone who attended the event commended the commitment of district education teams and reaffirmed their support for ongoing education reform efforts. They emphasized that investing in local leadership and district-driven solutions remains critical to achieving quality education and broader education transformation goals.
The District of Excellence 2026 initiative seeks to recognize districts making measurable progress while promoting peer learning and the exchange of successful practices across communities. Organizers noted that lessons gathered from the showcase will contribute to future education planning, policy development and programming.
