Liberia’s top-tier women’s football team, Determine Girls, moved to the top of the WAFU A Women’s qualifier for the CAF Women’s Champions League after defeating title holders AS Mandé 3-1 on match day three of the qualifiers, underway at the Southern Arena in Sierra Leone’s second city, Bo.
Catherine Jatta opened the scoring for Determine Girls in the 29th minute, and Bountou Sylla increased their lead with her stunning strike from the left side of AS Mandé’s defense in the last five minutes before halftime.
In the 68th minute, Jatta doubled her tally with a brilliant right-footed shot. The defending champions, who fought tirelessly to overturn the result, scored a consolation goal through Fatamatou Diarra in the 76th minute.
The result has placed Determine Girls at the top of the group with six points from two games.
The hosts, Mogbewmo Queens, earned a disappointing result after their 2-2 draw against Aigles de la Médina and still sit 4th on the table with two points.
Meanwhile, a win for Determine Girls in their next match against Mogbewmo on August 8th will automatically earn them the championship title.
