Chief Justice of Sierra Leone, His Lordship Justice Komba Kamanda, has inspected a Guard of Honour mounted by the Sierra Leone Police to mark the commencement of the 2026/2027 Judicial Year.
The ceremonial Guard of Honour, mounted at the Law Courts Building on Siaka Stevens Street in Freetown, comprised two platoons of the Sierra Leone Police, each consisting of 48 officers, alongside flanking officers, bearers and a supervisor.
Upon arrival at the court premises, Chief Justice Kamanda was received by the Guard of Honour and proceeded to inspect the formation before retiring to his Chambers for the formal opening of the Judicial Year.
The ceremony formed part of the formal proceedings marking the opening of the new Judicial Year and served as a ceremonial expression of respect for the office of the Chief Justice and the Judiciary.
Following the inspection, the Chief Justice formally declared the commencement of the 2026/2027 Judicial Year.
The opening underscores the Judiciary’s continuing responsibility to ensure that civil and criminal cases are determined fairly, efficiently and in accordance with the Constitution and laws of Sierra Leone.
The ceremony also highlighted the institutional cooperation between the Judiciary and other state institutions, particularly the Sierra Leone Police, whose role supports the administration of criminal justice and the maintenance of security within the justice system.
The Guard of Honour therefore formed part of the ceremonial protocol accompanying the opening of the Judicial Year, while symbolizing institutional respect for the office of the Chief Justice and the Judiciary’s constitutional responsibility to administer justice.
