The Regional Police Commander South, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Joseph Ibrahim Lahai, has engaged the Njala University Academic Staff Association (ASA) at the university’s Torwama Campus in Bo City to address rumours of a possible security threat.
The engagement, held on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, brought together senior police officers and representatives of the academic staff association to clarify the situation and strengthen cooperation between the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) and the university community.
AIG Lahai was accompanied by the Deputy Regional Police Commander South, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mrs. Fatty Daboh Kamara; Regional Operations Commander, Superintendent Mohamed H. Bangura, alias 19; and Regional Support Officer South, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Osman Kamara.
During the meeting, the President of the Academic Staff Association, Aiah James Sandy, clarified that the academic staff were on strike and that the industrial action was not related to any security threat.
The clarification helped distinguish the ongoing industrial action from rumours of a possible security incident, underscoring the importance of verifying information before sharing it.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for the police leadership to listen to the concerns of academic staff, promote mutual understanding and encourage responsible communication on issues affecting peace and security within the university community.
The engagement forms part of the Southern Regional Police Command’s efforts to address security concerns through proactive policing, stakeholder engagement and timely communication.
Cooperation between the police and educational institutions is essential to maintaining a peaceful academic environment. Open communication can also help prevent misunderstandings and ensure that concerns are addressed through the appropriate channels.
The Sierra Leone Police urges members of the public to verify information before sharing it and to report credible security concerns to the relevant authorities. Public cooperation remains important in protecting lives and property and maintaining peace and stability.
The engagement reaffirmed the importance of continued collaboration between the Southern Regional Police Command and the Njala University community to promote security, public confidence and a safe environment for teaching and learning.
