The Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Dr. Isata Mahoi, has commended the commissioning of 70 female drivers into the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), describing it as a significant step towards breaking barriers and creating greater opportunities for women in the security sector.

The commissioning ceremony was held on Monday, 7th September 2026, at the Julius Maada Bio Parade Square, Wilberforce Barracks, under the theme, “Celebrate the Strength and Service of Women in Uniform.”

The 70 female drivers were supported by the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs and UN Women through the Elsie Initiative Fund.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Mahoi joined the RSLAF in celebrating the courage, dedication and professionalism of women serving in uniform. She urged the newly commissioned drivers to uphold professionalism and remain committed to their responsibilities as they serve the country.

She noted that the contributions of women across Sierra Leone’s security sector continue to strengthen the country’s peace, security and development.

The Minister reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to increasing women’s participation and leadership, while also promoting their protection and empowerment. She stressed the need to ensure that the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act 2022 translates into meaningful opportunities and lasting change for women and girls.

“To every woman in service: your courage inspires us, your sacrifice matters, and your leadership is shaping Sierra Leone’s future,” Dr. Mahoi stated.

She encouraged the female drivers to work together and contribute to building a better Sierra Leone where every woman is recognized, respected, protected and empowered to serve and lead.

The Minister thanked the women for their sacrifices and encouraged them to remain courageous and committed to serving their country with distinction.
