AYV Media Empire journalist and education reporter George Batilo Powell has been recognized among the 100 Most Influential Youth Leaders in West Africa for 2026.
Powell received the “Most Influential Change Maker” award in recognition of his contribution to journalism and his efforts to highlight issues affecting young people and the education sector in Sierra Leone.
The recognition was presented on August 29, 2026, by the Media Advocacy Network Sierra Leone (MAN SL) in collaboration with the International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA).
As an education reporter at AYV Media Empire, Powell has focused much of his work on issues affecting schools, pupils, teachers and other stakeholders within the education sector.
Through his reporting, he has brought public attention to challenges facing the sector while providing a platform for pupils, teachers and education stakeholders to share their experiences and concerns.
His work has also sought to encourage public discussion around issues requiring attention from relevant institutions and policymakers.
Beyond his newsroom responsibilities, Powell has been using his initiative, School News Dissemination (SND), to create opportunities for young people interested in journalism, communication and media.
The initiative seeks to encourage pupils to develop their communication skills while creating greater interest in journalism among young people.
The recognition therefore highlights both Powell’s professional work as a journalist and his wider efforts to support young people through media and communication.
In a separate recognition during the same ceremony, Powell was also awarded the “Global Peace Ambassadorial Title 2026.”
The title was conferred by the International Association of World Peace Advocates, with a certificate presented to him during the event.
The two recognitions add to Powell’s growing profile as a young journalist whose work extends beyond traditional news reporting.
His recognition comes at a time when journalism continues to play an important role in drawing attention to social issues and providing citizens with information on matters affecting their communities.
For Powell, the awards represent recognition of efforts to use journalism and communication to create awareness, amplify voices and encourage positive change.
The recognition also places greater attention on the contribution of young journalists to public discourse and social development in Sierra Leone and the wider West African region.
