The Sierra Leone Tug of War Association is set to represent the country at the 2026 World Nomad Games, scheduled to take place in the Kyrgyz Republic from August 31 to September 6, 2026.
The participation will provide Sierra Leonean athletes with an opportunity to compete on the international stage against athletes from different countries while showcasing their strength, teamwork, discipline and determination.
The sixth edition of the World Nomad Games returns to Kyrgyzstan, the birthplace of the event. The Games bring together athletes from across the world to compete in traditional sporting disciplines while promoting cultural heritage.
For the Sierra Leone Tug of War Association, the participation marks a significant milestone in the development and promotion of the sport in the country. The international platform is also expected to provide athletes and officials with valuable experience, opportunities to establish relationships with other national associations and exposure to international standards in Tug of War.
The Games will officially open on August 31, 2026, with activities taking place in Bishkek and the Issyk-Kul region. More than 60 countries had confirmed their participation by May, according to reports on preparations for the event.
Speaking on the delegation’s participation, Secretary-General of the Sierra Leone Tug of War Association, Karifa Thoronka, said the team was prepared to fly the national colours with pride and demonstrate Sierra Leone’s potential on the international stage.
Thoronka also appealed to the Government, corporate institutions, sports-loving individuals, development partners and the general public to support the delegation as it prepares for the international assignment.
He said participation in the World Nomad Games would help strengthen the development of Tug of War in Sierra Leone and encourage more young people to take up the sport.
The Association is therefore calling on Sierra Leoneans to rally behind the athletes and officials as they prepare to represent the country in Kyrgyzstan.
