Real Madrid defender Raúl Asencio has been convicted of drink-driving and fined €14,400 following an incident in Gran Canaria.
The 23-year-old centre-back was stopped at a routine checkpoint in San Bartolomé de Tirajana on August 16 while driving a Porsche. Breathalyser tests recorded alcohol levels of 0.90 mg/l and 0.88 mg/l, significantly above Spain’s legal limit of 0.25 mg/l.
Following a fast-track trial, a court in San Bartolomé de Tirajana imposed a €14,400 fine and an eight-month driving ban on Asencio.
Reports indicate that no accident occurred and that the defender was not driving recklessly at the time of the incident.
Asencio was in the Canary Islands recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during pre-season and subsequently missed Real Madrid’s friendly match in Germany. He remains sidelined due to the injury.
The conviction comes as Asencio faces another legal matter in Gran Canaria relating to allegations dating back to 2023, with proceedings expected to take place this week.
