The Ministry of Information and Civic Education has reassured Sierra Leoneans that travelling to or transiting through Guinea remains permitted for citizens with valid travel documents who meet the country’s immigration and security requirements.
The clarification follows growing public concerns over reports of restrictions affecting Sierra Leonean travellers using Guinea as a transit route, particularly those travelling abroad for employment.
In a public notice dated August 20, 2026, the Ministry stated that Sierra Leoneans are not banned from travelling to or transiting through Guinea for legitimate purposes. Citizens who possess valid travel documents and satisfy Guinea’s immigration and security requirements may continue with their journeys.
However, the Government explained that restrictions apply to Sierra Leoneans attempting to use Guinea as a transit route for migration or overseas employment outside established legal procedures.
According to the Ministry, Guinean authorities have raised concerns over cases involving irregular migration, suspected human trafficking and unverified overseas employment arrangements.
The Government has therefore urged Sierra Leoneans seeking employment abroad to follow all lawful recruitment, labour and immigration procedures before travelling.
It also advised citizens to verify overseas employment opportunities through the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security before embarking on their journeys.
The Ministry warned travellers against using Guinea or other transit routes to bypass established recruitment and immigration procedures, noting that compliance with the proper processes could protect citizens from human trafficking, exploitation, fraudulent job offers and unnecessary travel difficulties.
The clarification follows a directive reportedly issued by Guinea’s Ministry of Security to the Special Commissioner of Ahmed Sékou Touré International Airport, restricting transit passage for Sierra Leonean migrants amid intensified measures against irregular migration and human trafficking.
Meanwhile, Sierra Leoneans who encounter difficulties while travelling through Guinea have been advised to contact the Sierra Leone Embassy in Conakry for consular assistance.
The Ministry assured citizens that the Government will continue engaging Guinean authorities and other international partners to facilitate legitimate travel while protecting Sierra Leoneans from trafficking, exploitation and other risks associated with irregular migration.
