A Chinese fishing vessel, YuanYu 708, has rescued five Sierra Leonean fishermen after their boat sank at sea, demonstrating the humanitarian spirit and social responsibility of Chinese fishing enterprises operating in Sierra Leone on Tuesday 4th August 2026.
The rescue operation took place under extremely challenging conditions, with heavy rain and rough seas making the mission highly dangerous. During a routine watch, Captain Wang Pingchao of the YuanYu 708 spotted distress signals from a local fishing boat that was sinking. He immediately suspended fishing operations and directed the vessel at full speed toward the location.
By the time the crew arrived at the scene, the fishing boat had already disappeared beneath the waves, leaving five Sierra Leonean fishermen struggling in the water without adequate life-saving equipment. The fishermen were at serious risk of drowning and suffering from hypothermia due to the harsh weather conditions.
The crew of the YuanYu 708 immediately activated emergency rescue procedures and notified their company management. In response, the company quickly coordinated additional assistance by dispatching another vessel, Chang Rong-3, with medical personnel to support the rescue effort.
Working together, the crews deployed life-saving equipment and successfully rescued all five fishermen. After being brought aboard, the survivors were provided with dry clothing, food, drinking water, basic medical attention, and emotional support to help them recover from the traumatic experience.
Following the successful rescue, the vessel completed all required reports and procedures with the relevant maritime and fisheries authorities in Sierra Leone. Officials from the Sierra Leone Navy, alongside local media representatives, later visited the vessel and praised the crew for their professionalism, courage, and quick response.
