The Leader of Government Business, Hon. Mathew S. Nyuma, has announced that Parliament will soon commence deliberations on the welfare of Members of Parliament (MPs), assuring the public that the discussions will be conducted openly and transparently.
Speaking during plenary on Thursday, 9 July 2026, Hon. Nyuma informed the Speaker and fellow lawmakers that consultations would be held with the Clerk of Parliament and Parliamentary leadership to schedule a debate on issues affecting the welfare of Members of Parliament.
He clarified that although he was not speaking under Standing Order 26, he considered it important to formally notify both Parliament and the public that the House would soon deliberate on matters relating to legislators’ welfare.
According to Hon. Nyuma, Members of Parliament have a legitimate right to discuss issues affecting their well-being, emphasizing that such deliberations should not be misunderstood or viewed negatively by the public.
He disclosed that healthcare would be one of the key issues to be considered during the debate, stressing the importance of ensuring that lawmakers have access to adequate medical care, alongside other welfare-related benefits necessary for the effective discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.
The Majority Leader further reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to transparency, noting that the proceedings would be held in an open session to allow citizens to follow the discussions.
“The public should know that we are free to discuss our welfare. I can see the cameras are on all of us, so we want to conduct our business in a very transparent manner. Our welfare will be discussed anytime from now,” Hon. Nyuma stated.
The anticipated debate is expected to provide lawmakers with an opportunity to review and discuss measures aimed at improving their welfare while reaffirming Parliament’s commitment to addressing institutional matters through an open, accountable, and transparent legislative process.
