President of the Republic of Sierra Leone and Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio, on Thursday, 2 July 2026, officially commissioned the new headquarters of the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja, Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in the regional bloc’s drive towards deeper integration and sustainable development.
The commissioning ceremony brought together senior government officials, diplomats, and regional leaders, including the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, H.E. Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR; the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Alieu Omar Touray; and the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Nigeria, H.E. Yu Dunhai, representing the Government of China, which financed and constructed the modern headquarters.
The new facility is expected to strengthen the operational capacity of the ECOWAS Commission, enhance regional cooperation, and improve the coordination of programmes aimed at promoting economic integration, peace, security, and sustainable development across West Africa.
Speaking during the ceremony, President Bio described the inauguration as a landmark achievement for the regional organization and reaffirmed ECOWAS’ commitment to building a more united, peaceful, and prosperous West Africa.
The commissioning of the new headquarters marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the ECOWAS Commission as it continues to pursue its vision of an integrated region where citizens enjoy peace, stability, economic opportunity, and shared prosperity.
