President Julius Maada Bio of the Republic of Sierra Leone held a constructive bilateral meeting with His Excellency Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, on 16 July 2026, focusing on the worsening security situation in the Sahel and other parts of West Africa.
The discussions took place at a critical time as armed groups, cross-border crime, and violent extremism continue to threaten peace and stability across the region. Both leaders reviewed recent developments in the Sahel and emphasized the urgent need for coordinated regional action to protect civilians and restore security.
Speaking after the meeting, President Bio reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to promoting peace and stability across West Africa. In his capacity as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, he pledged to strengthen regional solidarity and champion practical measures capable of delivering tangible results.
“I remain committed to strengthening regional solidarity and advancing practical measures that promote peace, stability, and sustainable development,” President Bio stated.
He stressed that ECOWAS must move beyond declarations and focus on concrete actions, including enhanced intelligence sharing, joint border security operations, and increased support for communities affected by conflict and instability.
President Ghazouani, whose country plays a strategic role in addressing security challenges in the Sahel, echoed the call for collective action. Both leaders agreed that stronger collaboration between Sahelian and coastal West African states is essential to prevent the further spread of insecurity across the region.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of sustainable development as a long-term solution to insecurity. The two presidents emphasized that lasting peace cannot be achieved without creating employment opportunities, expanding access to education, and building resilient institutions, particularly for young people who are often vulnerable to recruitment by extremist groups.
Political analysts view the meeting as a sign of renewed momentum for ECOWAS diplomacy under President Bio’s leadership. With insecurity increasingly affecting coastal West African nations, the effectiveness of regional cooperation and political commitment will be a critical test for the bloc in the months ahead.
At the conclusion of the talks, both leaders pledged to maintain close communication and work through ECOWAS mechanisms to ensure that national security strategies align with broader regional priorities aimed at promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development across West Africa.
