Members of Ireland’s Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, Cathy Bennett TD and Senator Joe O’Reilly, visited the Irish Embassy in Freetown, where they were received by embassy officials. The visit was described as a demonstration of support for the long-standing partnership between the two countries.
The Embassy stated that the visit underscores Ireland’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with Sierra Leone. Officials noted that the engagement would help deepen cooperation in key areas such as governance, education, health, and sustainable trade.
The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade plays a significant role in shaping Ireland’s foreign relations and development policy. The presence of its members in Freetown reflects growing interest among Irish lawmakers in Sierra Leone’s development progress and the opportunities for expanded collaboration.
Ireland has maintained strong diplomatic and development ties with Sierra Leone over the years, with a focus on rural development, climate resilience, and support for democratic institutions. The embassy visit comes as both governments seek to align priorities ahead of upcoming bilateral programmes.
Diplomats at the embassy emphasized that high-level visits such as this reinforce mutual trust and create opportunities for direct engagement between policymakers. For Sierra Leone, the visit is expected to enhance the visibility of local development priorities and attract more targeted support.
With trade and foreign affairs high on the agenda, the visit sets the stage for deeper technical cooperation between Irish and Sierra Leonean institutions in the months ahead.
