His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio on Friday 5th June 2026 received Mr. Cheikh Niang, Special Envoy of Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, at State House in Freetown.
Mr. Niang, who also serves as Senegal’s Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs, and Senegalese Abroad, delivered a special message from President Faye aimed at strengthening cooperation between Senegal and Sierra Leone.
During the meeting, President Bio extended warm fraternal greetings to his Senegalese counterpart and reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to deepening the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
“I conveyed my warmest fraternal greetings to President Faye and reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to strengthening the longstanding ties of friendship and cooperation between our two nations,” President Bio said following the engagement.
The discussions took place as both countries continue to collaborate on regional integration, peace and security, and economic development within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Senegal and Sierra Leone share longstanding historical and diplomatic ties, with continued cooperation in trade, education, and mutual support on regional and international platforms.
Mr. Niang’s visit also reflects President Faye’s broader efforts to strengthen relations with neighboring countries since assuming office. As Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs, and Senegalese Abroad, he plays a key role in advancing intra-African cooperationan objective that aligns closely with President Bio’s vision for regional solidarity and sustainable development.
According to State House officials, the meeting focused on several areas of mutual interest, including initiatives to enhance cross-border trade, promote youth empowerment, and strengthen cooperation in addressing security challenges affecting the Mano River Basin and the wider Sahel region.
President Bio’s reception of the Special Envoy underscores Sierra Leone’s commitment to maintaining active diplomatic engagement with Senegal as both countries pursue shared goals of regional stability, economic growth, and development.
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing optimism about expanding bilateral partnerships and enhancing cooperation in the months ahead.
