Julius Maada Bio held talks with former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan in Freetown on 26 May 2026, during Jonathan’s visit in his capacity as Special Envoy of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The two leaders met at the presidential office for what the Sierra Leone Presidency described as a constructive discussion on bilateral relations and regional issues. President Bio said he conveyed fraternal greetings to President Tinubu during the meeting.

Jonathan’s visit reflects Nigeria’s continued use of special envoys for high-level diplomatic engagement within West Africa. Since leaving office in 2015, Jonathan has undertaken several diplomatic assignments on behalf of Abuja, often focusing on election observation and mediation within Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) member states.

Sierra Leone and Nigeria maintain strong historical ties as founding members of ECOWAS. Nigeria played a leading role in the ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) during Sierra Leone’s civil war, and the two countries have since continued cooperation in trade, security, and post-conflict reconstruction efforts.

Freetown has also hosted a series of regional consultations this year ahead of upcoming ECOWAS summits, with leaders focusing on political stability and economic integration across West Africa.

Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, while President Tinubu assumed office in May 2023 following Nigeria’s general elections.
