Sierra Leone commemorated its 65th Independence Anniversary with a renewed call for national unity and decisive economic action, as the government unveiled a $2.2 billion energy investment aimed at easing economic pressures and driving long-term growth.
The celebrations began with an interfaith service at State House on Sunday, emphasizing shared values of peace, tolerance, and mutual respect. The gathering underscored the importance of unity in sustaining national cohesion, framing independence not only as a historic milestone but as a continuing responsibility for all citizens. Sierra Leone’s religious and ethnic diversity was highlighted as a source of strength, with calls for citizens to prioritize national interest and collective progress.
In a national address delivered on Tuesday, President Julius Maada Bio acknowledged the economic challenges facing the country, including rising living costs driven by global conflicts, supply chain disruptions, and increasing fuel prices. These pressures, he noted, have affected essential commodities such as food, transportation, fertilizer, rent, and electricity.
While short-term relief measures including cash transfers, strategic commodity reserves, and temporary transport fare support remain in place, the government emphasized a longer-term strategy focused on reducing import dependence and increasing domestic production. The year 2026 has been declared a “year of action and accelerated execution” to advance these priorities.
At the center of this strategy is the “Mission 300 Energy Compact,” a $2.2 billion initiative designed to significantly expand electricity access across the country. This marks the largest energy investment in Sierra Leone’s history and aims to connect hundreds of thousands of households, reduce reliance on volatile fuel markets, and stimulate economic activity.
Improved electricity access is expected to lower operational costs for businesses and ease financial pressure on households, while supporting growth in key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and services.
Agriculture has also been identified as a critical pillar of national transformation. The government’s renewed focus on the sector seeks to boost local production, enhance food security, and stabilize prices by reducing dependence on imports.
On governance, the address stressed that political differences should not disrupt public service delivery. The return of elected officials to their duties was welcomed as a step toward strengthening institutional stability. The government also reaffirmed its commitment to electoral reforms through the tripartite committee process.
The 65th Independence Anniversary comes at a time when Sierra Leone is prioritizing development in education, infrastructure, and economic resilience. Leaders emphasized that unity remains essential to achieving these goals.
The observance concluded with a call for citizens to confront current challenges with maturity and solidarity. The Mission 300 Energy Compact and the expanded agricultural agenda were presented as practical pathways toward economic relief, national stability, and sustainable development.
