Julius Maada Bio has officially launched the ‘Salon Pikin 4 Play and Lan Outcomes Fund’ at Country Lodge, signaling a renewed effort to strengthen early childhood education and build a solid foundation for modern learning in Sierra Leone.
Speaking at the launch on Saturday, President Bio reaffirmed that education remains a top priority of his administration. He emphasized his government’s commitment to investing in infrastructure and programmes that equip children with the tools they need to succeed. The new outcomes fund is designed to promote quality and play-based learning while improving foundational literacy and numeracy among young children across the country.
The initiative, known as ‘Salon Pikin 4 Play and Lan, focuses on early childhood development, recognizing that strong cognitive and social skills acquired in the early years are critical for long-term academic success. Officials noted that the fund will support interventions that combine structured play with targeted learning outcomes, helping children transition more effectively into primary education.
President Bio stated that his government is “passionately committed to building the infrastructure that will give our children a solid foundation for success in modern education.” He added that the fund will link financing directly to measurable results, ensuring that resources contribute to improvements in classroom practices, teacher support, and learning environments.
The launch event brought together education stakeholders, development partners, and government officials, all of whom emphasized the importance of coordinated investment in early childhood education. The initiative aligns with the country’s broader education reform agenda, which has prioritized free quality school education while increasingly focusing on the critical early years.
By trying funding to outcomes, the Salon Pikin 4 Play and Lan Outcomes Fund aims to accelerate progress in foundational learning and reduce disparities in school readiness. Authorities explained that the model will promote innovation and accountability, with partners working collaboratively to track progress and scale up effective approaches.
The launch marks another significant step in the government’s ongoing efforts to position education as a key driver of national development and human capital growth.
