His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone and President Joseph Nyuma Boakai have jointly launched a 255-kilometre road upgrade project aimed at strengthening trade, mobility, and regional integration across the Mano River Union and the wider West African region.

The project, implemented under a Design, Build, Operate, and Transfer (DBOT) concession, covers two strategic corridors designed to reduce travel time and transport costs while improving cross-border economic activity.

The Western Corridor includes the construction of a four-lane highway from St. Paul Bridge through Klay to Bo Waterside, with additional links from Klay to Tubmanburg and from Madina Junction to Robertsport. The Northern Corridor consists of an 86-kilometre two-lane road from Voinjama to Mendikorma.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony in Bo Waterside, President Bio described the project as a “historic milestone” and a “dividend of peace” for both countries. He noted that the upgraded roads will facilitate the free movement of people, goods, and services while reducing the cost of doing business along the border.

“For too long, cross-border travel in this region has been hampered by poor infrastructure. Today’s launch marks a new chapter of cooperation and progress,” he said.

President Bio credited the relative peace and stability in both Sierra Leone and Liberia for creating a conducive environment for major infrastructure investment, stressing that peace remains essential for sustainable development.

As Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, he also framed the project within a broader regional context. He said the corridor represents a key component of West Africa’s economic infrastructure and aligns with ECOWAS objectives on regional integration and connectivity. “This is not just a road project for Liberia; it is a regional statement one that strengthens connectivity, promotes trade, and brings us closer to a truly integrated West African market,” he added.

President Bio commended President Boakai’s leadership, describing the initiative as a reflection of shared commitment to cooperation over isolation. He also urged citizens of both countries to protect the peace that has enabled such development.

The project is expected to enhance commerce, improve mobility, and deepen cooperation among Mano River Union states, supporting broader efforts toward sustainable growth and economic transformation in the sub-region.

For decades, poor road infrastructure has limited trade between Sierra Leone and Liberia despite strong cultural and economic ties. The new corridors are expected to unlock agricultural and commercial opportunities, improve access to ports and markets, and significantly reduce logistical challenges across the region.
