The Judiciary of Sierra Leone has announced that the country will, for the first time, host the prestigious ECOWAS Judicial Council Conference from April 20 to April 24, 2026, in Freetown.

According to a statement issued by the Judiciary, the five-day high-level gathering will take place at the Atlantic Hotel and is expected to bring together approximately 12 Chief Justices, 15 judges, and other distinguished judicial officers from across the Economic Community of West African States region.

The Judiciary described the conference as an important platform for strengthening judicial cooperation among member states, promoting the rule of law, and advancing judicial independence within ECOWAS countries. The meeting is also intended to encourage cross-border collaboration among courts and address shared challenges facing judicial systems in the region.

The statement further noted that hosting the conference underscores Sierra Leone’s growing leadership role in regional judicial reform efforts. It reflects the country’s commitment to ensuring judicial independence, improving accountability, and deepening legal cooperation across West Africa.

Speaking ahead of the conference, His Lordship Justice Komba Kamanda emphasized the significance of the event. He stated that hosting the conference is not only a milestone for the national judiciary but also for the country, highlighting Sierra Leone’s dedication to strengthening judicial institutions across the region.

Chief Justice Kamanda noted that the gathering will foster cooperation among courts and support the advancement of democratic governance through adherence to the rule of law.

Although organizers have not released a full agenda, the conference is expected to include discussions on key issues affecting the judiciary in the region, including judicial independence and emerging challenges in the administration of justice. These deliberations will focus on how court leaders can uphold rights, improve case management, and maintain public trust in justice systems.

The Judiciary also expressed its readiness to welcome distinguished delegates and facilitate meaningful engagements that will contribute to the advancement of justice across the ECOWAS region. The conference is expected to strengthen professional ties among judicial leaders and promote shared solutions to common legal and governance challenges.
