As the world observes World Health Day 2026, Sierra Leone is reflecting on its remarkable progress in transforming healthcare through science.

Dr. George Ameh, the World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Sierra Leone, emphasized the importance of “standing with science” to achieve better health outcomes for all citizens.

Over the past two decades, Sierra Leone has recorded significant improvements in maternal and child health. Maternal mortality has declined by 74%, while under-five mortality has fallen by 55% between 2000 and 2023. These achievements are the result of sustained investments in policy reform, service delivery, and health data systems, supported by WHO and other development partners.

A major milestone was the introduction of the malaria vaccine in 2024, which now protects children under five from one of the leading causes of death in the country. Additionally, the launch of the National Health Information Hub in January 2026 has enabled real-time monitoring of health outcomes, allowing policymakers and planners to make evidence-based decisions and deliver improved services.

Dr. Ameh stressed that science must reach every corner of society—from villages to hospitals, and from schools to households. “We celebrate the mother who now has a greater chance of surviving childbirth, the child protected through vaccination, and the health worker empowered by timely data,” he stated.

The WHO is urging the Government of Sierra Leone and its partners to deepen their commitment to science-driven reforms. This includes increasing domestic investment in scientific research, strengthening cross-sector collaboration, and empowering citizens with accurate, accessible health information to combat misinformation and build trust in science.

As Sierra Leone draws inspiration from global milestones, the country must continue to consolidate its commitment to science-based reforms and expand local research capacity. By standing with science, Sierra Leone can create a healthier, safer future for all its citizens.
