The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs successfully hosted a three-day Culture and Creativity Weekend Getaway at the scenic Sulima Beach, drawing national attention to one of Sierra Leone’s most breathtaking and underexplored coastal destinations.

The initiative forms part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to promote domestic tourism, stimulate local economies, and position diverse destinations across the country on the global tourism map. The Ministry’s agencies, including the National Tourist Board (NTB) and the Monuments and Relics Commission (MRC), alongside other sector partners, were present in Sulima, reinforcing a unified national approach to tourism development.

The official opening was led by the Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Farida Tunis, who described Sulima as more than just a border town near Liberia. With over 40 kilometres of golden sand and rolling Atlantic waves as a backdrop, she reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to showcasing unique destinations while encouraging investment in hospitality infrastructure, including guesthouses, hotels, and marine transport services.

Her message emphasized that tourism development is a shared national responsibility requiring collaboration between government, private investors, and local communities.

Over the first two days, Sulima transformed into a vibrant stage for culture and creativity. Activities included community engagements along the beachfront, live entertainment, and captivating performances by the Sierra Leone National Dance Troupe, the Sierra Leone Acrobats, and the Reggae Union.

Sierra Leone’s rich gastronomy was also prominently featured, offering guests authentic local cuisine and highlighting the country’s culinary heritage as a key component of the tourism experience.

The wellness aspect of the getaway was underscored through a refreshing beachside yoga session promoting relaxation, balance, and healthy living as integral elements of destination experiences.

Community participation remained central to the event, including a friendly football match between Ministry staff and Sulima’s “Sand Boys.” Evening celebrations featured vibrant performances by Star Zee, Amie Kallon, Speedo, Bobby, Apreel, and other dynamic artists, further energizing the festival atmosphere.

The Culture and Creativity Weekend demonstrated the transformative potential of culture-led tourism. By investing in local creatives, engaging host communities, and showcasing Sulima’s natural beauty, the Ministry reinforced Sierra Leone’s identity as a destination rich in authenticity and opportunity.

Beyond celebration, the event delivered a strong message of resilience, inclusivity, and sustainable growth for the nation’s tourism sector, aligning with broader efforts to diversify the economy and promote national development through tourism.
