Sierra Leone recently participated in the 6th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour held in Morocco, a significant international event organized in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The conference provided a platform for countries around the world to share strategies, exchange experiences, and reaffirm their commitments to eradicating child labour in all its forms.

During the event, Sierra Leone reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening partnerships at both national and international levels to combat child labour effectively. The delegation emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts among government institutions, civil society organizations, community stakeholders, and international partners in advancing child protection initiatives.

Representatives highlighted the country’s progress in implementing policies aimed at safeguarding children’s rights and improving access to education and better living conditions. They outlined several initiatives designed to address the root causes of child labour, particularly poverty and limited access to quality education. The government continues to promote programs that expand educational opportunities while engaging communities in raising awareness about the importance of keeping children in school.

While acknowledging the progress made, Sierra Leone’s delegates also recognized the persistent challenges in eliminating child labour. They stressed the need for sustained political will, increased funding, and stronger international cooperation. The delegation called for enhanced support from global partners and the ILO to strengthen the country’s capacity to implement existing frameworks and develop innovative strategies.

The conference concluded with a collective pledge by participating countries to intensify efforts toward ending child labour worldwide. Sierra Leone’s renewed commitment reflects the nation’s determination to ensure that every child grows up in a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment free from exploitation.

As global discussions continue, Sierra Leone remains resolute in prioritizing children’s education, protection, and overall well-being as central pillars of national development.
