The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, has commissioned Mulu Poultry Farm Ltd in Koidu City, Kono District, as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen domestic food production under the Feed Salone initiative.
The commissioning ceremony, held on Monday in Koidu, marked the establishment of what officials described as the first modern poultry facility of its kind in Kono District. The farm operates a battery cage production system and currently maintains an initial stock of 3,000-layer birds, producing approximately 3,000 eggs daily.
Dr. Kpaka stated that the project aligns with President Julius Maada Bio’s call to increase local food production and reduce dependence on imported eggs. He emphasized that expanding poultry production is critical to closing the country’s egg import gap and enhancing national food security.
According to the Minister, collaboration between the government and the private sector remains central to transforming Sierra Leone’s agricultural sector. He noted that initiatives such as Mulu Poultry Farm demonstrate how private investment can effectively support national policy objectives.
The proprietor of Mulu Poultry Farm, Madam Sitta Kaikai, explained that her decision to invest in poultry farming was motivated by a desire to contribute meaningfully to national food production. Through her company, Chuma Agro, she previously provided mechanized farming services to farmers in Kono District, supporting crop production across the area.
Madam Kaikai said the poultry venture reflects the positive impact of targeted government support in encouraging reinvestment and expanding agricultural value chains. She also disclosed plans to scale up production soon.
Officials indicated that the farm is expected to create employment opportunities and improve access to locally produced eggs in Kono District and surrounding communities.
The commissioning forms part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security’s ongoing efforts to promote private sector participation in achieving the objectives of the Feed Salone programme.
