On Sunday, 8 February 2026, Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh conducted a working visit to a large-scale aquaculture and agricultural facility in Fakunya Chiefdom, Moyamba District, as part of ongoing efforts to assess and promote private-sector contributions to national food security.

The visit, hosted by former Deputy Minister of Agriculture and CEO of the Global Food Action and Aquatic Center (DBA Continental Food Action), Mr. Samking Braima, showcased a strategic investment aimed at expanding domestic fish production, strengthening rural livelihoods, and enhancing food sovereignty. The Chief Minister praised the scale, innovation, and long-term vision of the project, describing it as a model for sustainable agribusiness development.

The facility features ten industrial scale fish ponds, each measuring 200 metres by 50 metres, with the capacity to produce approximately 850,000 catfish and 85,000 tilapia per pond. It is supported by a modern hatchery capable of producing up to 10 million fry annually, providing critical inputs for aquaculture value chains across the country. Currently, the farm maintains over 200,000 fish in production.

Mr. Braima highlighted that the project is driven by a clear mandate to improve rural economic standards while ensuring reliable access to affordable, locally produced protein. The Chief Minister noted that the initiative directly supports Pillar One of the Government’s Big Five Game Changers Feed Salone by increasing local food production, reducing import dependency, and creating employment opportunities.

Dr. Sengeh reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to facilitating collaboration between the Ministries of Agriculture and Food Security and Fisheries and Marine Resources, and to linking credible agribusiness ventures with Development Finance Institutions to mobilize investment and scale economic impact nationwide.
