On Tuesday, January 13, 2026, the new Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Amb. Zhao Yong, paid a courtesy visit to the Rt. Hon. Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas to discuss ways to further strengthen bilateral relations between Sierra Leone and China.
Ambassador Zhao expressed gratitude for the warm reception and admiration for Sierra Leone’s development progress, highlighting the country’s significant improvements over the years.
He emphasized his commitment to the Sierra Leone-China Strategic People Cooperative Partnership, aiming to build on the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two nations. Ambassador Zhao noted that his visit to Sierra Leone after 16 years underscores the importance China places on the relationship.
Speaker Thomas welcomed Ambassador Zhao and spoke about the enduring relationship between Sierra Leone and China, which spans over 50 years. He recalled Sierra Leone’s support for China’s nomination to the United Nations Security Council, reflecting the country’s commitment to the partnership.
The Speaker also reaffirmed that the Sixth Parliament is a “People’s Parliament,” analogous to China’s National People’s Congress. He assured Ambassador Zhao that he would enjoy the same excellent working relationship with Parliament as his predecessor.
Ambassador Zhao expressed his desire to collaborate closely with Parliament to deepen cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, trade, investment, health, education, and technology. He affirmed that China would continue to support Sierra Leone’s development, noting that China has a deeper understanding of Sierra Leone’s progress than many Western countries.
The meeting concluded with a gift exchange and photo session, symbolizing strengthened ties between the two nations. Speaker Thomas invited Ambassador Zhao to return to Parliament on the next adjourned date to engage directly with Members of Parliament.
This visit marks a significant milestone in Sierra Leone-China relations, with both countries committed to enhancing cooperation and mutual understanding. The strategic partnership is expected to bring mutual benefits, promoting economic growth, development, and regional stability.
