In a landmark move, President Julius Maada Bio has officially signed the Child Rights Act 2024 into law, marking a significant milestone in Sierra Leone’s ongoing efforts to protect and promote the rights of children. The announcement was made by the Solicitor General, Robert Kowa Esq.
According to Robert Kowa Esq., the signing of the Child Rights Act 2024 underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of children in the country. The new law is expected to provide enhanced protection and support for children, improving their quality of life.
During the announcement, the Solicitor General also highlighted the positive impact of the Proportional Representation (PR) System, which has led to a substantial increase in women’s representation in Parliament. Since its introduction, the PR system has resulted in a 30% increase in women’s participation, ensuring that more women have a voice in the country’s decision-making processes.
Robert Kowa Esq. emphasized that the PR system, rooted in the 1991 Constitution, serves multiple purposes. It helps reduce political violence, fosters unity, and ensures fairer representation. By offering a more inclusive electoral system, the PR system contributes to a more stable and peaceful political environment.
The Solicitor General also encouraged political leaders to educate citizens about the long-term benefits of the PR system. Promoting a deeper understanding of the system will enable citizens to better appreciate its role in shaping the future of Sierra Leone and its potential to drive national development.
The signing of the Child Rights Act 2024 and the emphasis on the PR system both highlight the government’s dedication to advancing the welfare of its citizens, particularly vulnerable groups such as children and women. These initiatives are expected to contribute significantly to Sierra Leone’s development and foster a more equitable society.
