On Tuesday, 7th October 2025, the Parliament of Sierra Leone observed Cyber Security Awareness Month, joining global efforts to highlight the importance of online safety. The event, held in Committee Room One of the Parliament Building, emphasized Parliament’s commitment to safeguarding digital platforms and protecting sensitive data from cyber threats.
Speaking at the event, Mohamed Lebbie, Head of Parliament’s Cyber Security Unit, stressed the critical role of awareness in preventing cyberattacks. He cautioned staff against clicking on unknown links, which can lead to hacking, phishing, and other cybercrimes, and encouraged them to verify links before opening them. He also recommended regular password updates every three months, using complex combinations of letters, numbers, and symbols, as a practical measure to strengthen digital security. “This month is dedicated to raising awareness not just among parliamentary staff, but across Sierra Leone, to combat cyber threats,” Lebbie said.
Deputy Clerk of Parliament, Gilbert Bosco N’habay, echoed the need for vigilance, underscoring Parliament’s responsibility in building a resilient digital system. He called on both staff and citizens to collaborate in creating a safer online environment, reinforcing Parliament’s leadership role in the country’s digital transformation.
In his keynote address, Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs, Patrick M. Gibrilla, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving national cybersecurity. He highlighted President Bio’s initiatives to strengthen digital safety across both formal and informal sectors, citing the Cyber Security Act of 2021 and the establishment of the National Cyber Security Coordination Centre as key measures to combat cyber threats. Gibrilla emphasized that cybersecurity is a national responsibility that transcends politics.
The session was moderated by Sheku Lamin Turay, Director of Parliamentary and Public Relations, who stressed the urgency of enacting a data protection law. Turay stated that such legislation would further safeguard sensitive information and contribute to a digitally resilient Parliament and nation.
Through this event, Parliament not only commemorated Cyber Security Awareness Month but also reaffirmed its leadership role in promoting digital safety, protecting data, and fostering a cyber-aware society in Sierra Leone.
