In a surprising announcement, Bryan D. Hunt, the U.S. Ambassador to Sierra Leone, has officially resigned, effective September 17, 2025.

According to a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Freetown, Ambassador Hunt stepped down due to personal reasons related to family medical concerns and will not be returning to Sierra Leone. In the interim, Jared Yancey, the current Chargé d’Affaires, will lead the Embassy.

Ambassador Hunt served in Sierra Leone for two impactful years, during which he focused on strengthening the U.S.–Sierra Leone partnership across key areas such as health, security, and economic development. His leadership played a vital role in deepening U.S. engagement in the region.

In his farewell message to Embassy staff, Ambassador Hunt expressed heartfelt gratitude for his time in the country.

“I have loved every moment of my time in Sierra Leone and deeply admire the work you all do to advance the U.S.–Sierra Leone relationship,”  he stated.

His commitment to fostering collaboration and mutual respect has left a lasting impression on both nations.

The U.S. government reaffirmed its dedication to working closely with the Sierra Leonean government and its citizens. Despite Ambassador Hunt’s departure, the Embassy emphasized that the strong foundation built during his tenure will continue to guide and support bilateral cooperation.

Ambassador Hunt’s resignation comes at a time when U.S.–Sierra Leone relations are increasingly vital particularly in strengthening health infrastructure, promoting economic growth, and enhancing regional security. His leadership was instrumental in addressing shared challenges and encouraging constructive dialogue.

As the Embassy transitions under the leadership of Chargé d’Affaires Yancey, both the United States and Sierra Leone are expected to build on the momentum of recent progress, ensuring that the partnership continues to flourish.
