The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS) has unveiled an ambitious agricultural strategy for 2026-2028, positioning the sector as a key driver of Sierra Leone’s economic transformation. During the 2026 budget discussion at the Ministry of Finance Conference Hall, Dr. Theresa Tenneh Dick, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, presented the ministry’s Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), emphasizing technology, mechanization, and youth engagement as the pillars of a revitalized agricultural future.
Dr. Dick stressed that agriculture must evolve beyond subsistence farming to become a dynamic economic sector that attracts young innovators. She emphasized the ministry’s strategic focus on mechanization and value chain development as essential steps to make farming more appealing to the youth.
While acknowledging the important role young people already play in agricultural activities, Dr. Dick argued that greater investment in mechanized farming is necessary to reduce labor demands and boost productivity.
The Deputy Minister also introduced new initiatives aimed at empowering farmers, particularly the youth. These include backpacking schemes, mechanization services, and training workshops designed to improve yields and income.
Dr. Dick called for greater collaboration among the government, the private sector, and farming communities, stressing that collective action is key to strengthening food security and improving rural livelihoods. She assured participants that MAFS would continue to provide technical support and policy guidance to ensure the nationwide implementation of the strategy.
In closing, Dr. Dick encouraged open dialogue, urging stakeholders to refine the proposal before its final submission. She expressed her gratitude to the Ministry of Finance, development partners, and civil society groups for their continued support, reaffirming that agriculture remains a national priority requiring shared responsibility.
