Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh commended Mercy Ship efforts for transforming Sierra Leone’s healthcare system. He made this statement during the officially welcoming of the Mercy Ship as it docked at the port of Freetown, marking its eighth mission to Sierra Leone since its inaugural visit in 1992. The ship’s arrival reaffirms the longstanding partnership between the Government of Sierra Leone and Mercy Ships, a global organization committed to delivering free, life-changing surgical care to underserved communities around the world.
Mercy Ships operates with a vision of restoring dignity and hope through surgical interventions and medical capacity-building. During its previous two missions to Sierra Leone, the organization performed over 3,600 surgeries, significantly improving health outcomes for thousands of people and providing vital training to local medical staff.
In his address at the welcoming ceremony, Vice President Jalloh highlighted the critical role Mercy Ships continues to play in supporting Sierra Leone’s healthcare development.
“The activities of Mercy Ships align perfectly with our government’s healthcare delivery plan,” he said. “Their interventions support our focus on strengthening the health workforce, improving infrastructure, increasing access to medical supplies, and providing world-class diagnostic services.”
The ship’s arrival comes at a crucial time as Sierra Leone continues to tackle systemic healthcare challenges, many of which are rooted in resource limitations. In addition to offering free surgical services, the Mercy Ship mission includes training programs for local healthcare professionals, aiming to leave a sustainable impact by building long-term capacity within the country’s health sector.
As preparations begin for surgical operations and training activities, local officials and medical practitioners expressed enthusiasm for the renewed collaboration. The mission is expected to significantly enhance surgical care, medical education, and professional development in the country.
The partnership with Mercy Ships underscores a shared commitment to improving healthcare access and quality for all Sierra Leoneans. As the ship sets sail on another chapter of healing and hope, it reflects a promising future for Sierra Leone’s healthcare landscape.
