The Minister of Social Welfare, Mrs. Melrose Karminty, has reassured persons with disabilities of the government’s continued support following a recent fire disaster that severely impacted the United Polio Brothers and Sisters Training Centre.

During her visit to the centre, Mrs. Karminty donated bags of rice to the members and reassured them that her ministry is working on long-term strategies to enhance their economic empowerment. She emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that persons with disabilities can live with dignity, independence, and self-reliance.

The Chairman of the centre, Saidu Abdulai Sesay, expressed deep gratitude to the minister, describing her as “a leader of action who reflects the vision of His Excellency Julius Maada Bio.” He outlined the significant impact of the fire, which destroyed vital tools and office spaces, and appealed for urgent government and donor support to rebuild the training facilities and provide essential equipment for skills development.

Mr. Sesay highlighted that the community has made intentional efforts to move away from street begging, focusing instead on productivity and empowerment. However, he warned that this progress could be jeopardized without swift intervention.

The Commissioner of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), Brima Sheriff, also praised the minister’s intervention, noting her consistent concern for the well-being of persons with disabilities. He emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to address long-term challenges, such as employment, inclusion, and accessibility.

Mr. Sheriff pledged his office’s commitment to working with the Ministry of Social Welfare and organizations like the training centre to develop sustainable solutions that restore hope and build capacity.
