The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA) has intensified its port modernization efforts at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay in Freetown, ushering in a new era of improved trade facilitation, maritime safety, and national economic development.

Under the dynamic leadership of Director-General Dr. Abdulai Fofana, the Authority is implementing a series of transformative initiatives aligned with international best practices, positioning Sierra Leone as a competitive maritime hub in West Africa.

In recent months, the SLPHA has completed several critical infrastructure upgrades, including the rehabilitation of access roads within the port area, enhanced container handling systems, and expanded docking facilities to accommodate larger vessels. These upgrades aim to reduce vessel turnaround time, streamline port operations, and boost investor confidence.

In addition to physical improvements, the Authority has significantly enhanced port security by installing modern surveillance and cargo screening technologies. These upgrades align with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, ensuring compliance with global maritime safety standards.

Speaking to the media, Dr. Fofana underscored the importance of digital transformation in improving port operations.

“We have introduced advanced port management systems to automate cargo clearance, enhance transparency, and improve efficiency in service delivery,” he said. “These improvements serve not only economic development goals but also the interests of all port users.”

The SLPHA has also deepened collaboration with key stakeholders shipping agencies, importers, exporters, and customs authorities to streamline operations and reduce administrative bottlenecks. Additionally, the Authority is prioritizing human capital development by providing regular training and capacity-building programs for staff.

Looking ahead, Dr. Fofana announced plans for a comprehensive port expansion project, aimed at increasing cargo throughput and boosting national revenue generation. He reaffirmed SLPHA’s commitment to supporting President Julius Maada Bio’s agenda for economic diversification and infrastructure development.

Recent improvements at the port have been widely praised by stakeholders, who commended the SLPHA’s leadership for its forward-thinking and proactive approach to maritime reform.

With these strategic developments, the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority is not only revitalizing its infrastructure but also reinforcing its role as a vital gateway for regional and international trade.
