His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio has announced, with deep sorrow, the passing of Dr. Kadie Sesay a trailblazing Sierra Leonean academic, politician, and lifelong advocate for women’s rights.
In a heartfelt message, President Bio recalled their partnership during the 2012 presidential elections, where Dr. Sesay served as his running mate. “Dr. Sesay brought grace, intellect, and an unyielding passion for justice and equality to our campaign,” he said.
Dr. Kadie Sesay made history as the first woman to run for vice president in Sierra Leone, breaking significant ground for female political leadership in the country. Throughout her life, she remained a committed champion of gender equality, education, and national development inspiring generations of Sierra Leonean women to pursue leadership roles in all sectors of society.
Born in Rotifunk, Bumpe Chiefdom, Moyamba District, with roots in Rhombe, Lokomasama Chiefdom, Port Loko District, Dr. Sesay dedicated much of her early career to academia. She became one of the first female lecturers at Fourah Bay College, later serving as Head of the English Department. Her passion for education and social progress led her into public service, where she held several key government positions, including Minister of Development and Economic Planning and Minister of Trade and Industry.
Widely respected for her intellect, integrity, and unwavering commitment to public service, Dr. Sesay’s influence extended far beyond the classroom and the Cabinet. Her work as a university lecturer and consultant, combined with her advocacy for women’s rights, left a profound mark on Sierra Leone’s development.
We mourn the loss of a remarkable leader, a devoted mother, and a beloved national figure. Her contributions to education, politics, and social progress were immense. Her legacy is not only one of historic firsts, but of enduring impact — a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.
May her soul rest in perfect peace!
