On 24th May 2025, Sierra Leone’s Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, visited the MPOX treatment facility at the Police Training School in Hastings, where he observed notable progress in the country’s ongoing response to the MPOX outbreak.

His visit came at a crucial time, as new cases continue to emerge across the Western Area and other regions. Despite this, the recovery rate remains encouraging, reflecting the effectiveness of coordinated health interventions.

During his tour, Dr. Jalloh reported that approximately 1,630 recoveries have been recorded nationwide in recent days, including 18 recoveries at the Hastings facility alone. “While these numbers are encouraging, we must remain vigilant,” he emphasized, stressing the importance of community outreach and public awareness* to ensure early detection and treatment of suspected cases.

The Vice President’s visit highlights the strong collaboration between the Government of Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS), the National Public Health Agency (NPHA), and key international partners including the World Bank, Gavi, WHO Sierra Leone, and the World Food Programme (WFP)

This partnership has been instrumental in ensuring the delivery of quality healthcare services at treatment facilities, boosting public confidence in the national health response.

Despite the promising recovery figures, health officials continue to emphasize the critical need for community engagement. Dr. Jalloh called on citizens to participate actively in public health campaigns, underscoring that early reporting and swift medical intervention are essential to curbing the spread of the virus.

“We need everyone to be alert and proactive. Together, we can overcome this challenge,” the Vice President urged.

As the situation develops, the government remains steadfast in its commitment to combatting MPOX. Dr. Jalloh’s visit not only reassured the public of the government’s dedication but also served to mobilize community action in the collective fight against the outbreak.

In conclusion, this proactive and collaborative approach supported by national and international partnerships positions Sierra Leone to successfully manage and mitigate the MPOX outbreak, reinforcing the country’s resilience and unity in the face of health crises.
