Lansana Gberie, Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Switzerland and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, delivered a key statement during the World Trade Organization (WTO) General Council meeting, emphasizing the country’s strong commitment to food security and agricultural development.

Speaking under Agenda Item 9, Ambassador Gberie reiterated Sierra Leone’s unwavering support for a fair and balanced multilateral trading system that prioritizes development for all member states. He highlighted the country’s flagship agricultural initiative, “Feed Salone”, as a central component of national efforts to strengthen food security and promote sustainable farming practices.

Gberie’s address comes at a crucial time, as Sierra Leone intensifies its efforts to boost domestic food production and reduce reliance on imports amid global challenges impacting agriculture and trade. He stressed that food security remains a top priority for the nation, with a strong focus on empowering local farmers to enhance productivity and resilience.

By championing initiatives like “Feed Salone”, Sierra Leone aims to transform its agricultural sector into a driver of inclusive growth and national stability. Ambassador Gberie called on WTO member states to adopt development-oriented trade policies that support the aspirations of developing countries, particularly in achieving sustainable agricultural growth.

He urged global cooperation in building systems that not only facilitate trade but also empower nations to feed their populations and promote rural development.

As the WTO prepares for its 14th Ministerial Conference (MC14), Sierra Leone’s message underscores the importance of inclusive, equitable trade policies that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Ambassador’s remarks reinforced Sierra Leone’s commitment to playing an active role in shaping global agricultural policies that prioritize food sovereignty and long-term resilience.

In conclusion, Ambassador Gberie’s statement positioned Sierra Leone as a vocal advocate for farmers and food security on the international stage, aligning national efforts with the broader global agenda for sustainable development.
