In a significant step towards enhancing aviation cooperation, the Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), Madam Musayeroh Barrie, played a pivotal role during President Julius Maada Bio’s three-day state visit to Cairo on March 26, 2025. This visit underscored the commitment of both nations to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties, with aviation emerging as a key area of collaboration.
As a member of President Bio’s delegation, Madam Barrie participated in high-level discussions with key aviation stakeholders, including Capt. Sameh El Hefny, President of the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority, and Amr Adawy, Head of Commercial for EgyptAir. These talks, which were described as both promising and forward-looking, focused on improving aviation connectivity between Sierra Leone and Egypt.
Emphasizing the importance of these negotiations, Madam Barrie revealed that talks with EgyptAir for direct flights between Freetown and Cairo are in advanced stages. She highlighted that such a development would not only enhance travel convenience but also boost trade and tourism between the two nations.
“This partnership with EgyptAir represents a major step forward in Sierra Leone’s aviation sector,” said Madam Barrie. “It aligns with our broader vision to enhance global connectivity and attract international investments.”
Madam Barrie’s engagement with EgyptAir and the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority began in December 2024, reflecting a sustained effort to foster stronger bilateral ties. The recent discussions in Cairo have further reinforced this partnership, paving the way for increased technical exchanges, aviation training opportunities, and joint air transport projects.
Under Madam Barrie’s leadership, the SLCAA has undergone significant reforms, modernizing Sierra Leone’s air transport infrastructure to meet international standards. Notable initiatives include airport renovations, upgrades to air traffic control systems, and the development of regulatory frameworks that position Sierra Leone as a competitive player in regional aviation.
Beyond Egypt, Madam Barrie has also been instrumental in cultivating international aviation partnerships. The successful hosting of aviation forums in Sierra Leone, featuring Egyptian experts, highlights the growing professional and diplomatic rapport between the two countries.
Her contributions to Sierra Leone’s aviation sector continue to demonstrate her dedication and expertise. Her involvement in President Bio’s state visit further solidifies her position as a key driver of transformative change in the industry, ensuring that Sierra Leone remains on course for enhanced global connectivity and aviation excellence.
