Amid growing security concerns at the Sierra Leone-Guinea border, the Government of Sierra Leone, through the Office of National Security (ONS), has reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the longstanding Yenga border dispute.

Speaking at a recent briefing, National Security Coordinator Abdulai Caulker emphasized President Julius Maada Bio’s dedication to settling the border issue. According to Caulker, President Bio has dispatched several delegations to Guinea in an effort to address the Yenga dispute and establish a technical commission consisting of representatives from both Sierra Leone and Guinea. This commission aims to thoroughly examine the border situation and work towards an amicable resolution.

While the government has raised other issues for discussion with Guinea, resolving the Yenga matter remains a top priority. As part of efforts to foster peaceful coexistence, authorities have held six meetings across six chiefdoms in both Sierra Leone and Guinea. These engagements have sought to strengthen community relations and promote a harmonious atmosphere along the border.

Additionally, President Bio has tasked Chief Minister David Sengeh with forming a special committee to report on the Yenga situation. This report will be presented to the Ministerial Committee for further deliberation. Caulker described a recent meeting with Guinean authorities as one of the most productive discussions to date, noting that Guinean officials had submitted several documents for review—something that had not occurred in previous engagements.

Addressing rumors that Sierra Leone had sold Yenga to Guinea, Caulker categorically debunked the claim. He stressed that President Bio is taking a meticulous, step-by-step approach to resolving the matter diplomatically.

On the broader security front, Caulker assured the public that Sierra Leone remains relatively calm and peaceful, thanks to proactive security measures. He highlighted the effectiveness of the country’s National Security Architecture, which integrates multiple security sectors to respond to potential threats.

In light of the events of November 23rd, the security sector has intensified its vigilance to prevent any recurrence. However, Caulker reassured citizens that these measures are not intended to instill fear but to ensure the safety of all.

With the bolstered security presence and increased checkpoints, Sierra Leone has witnessed a significant rise in tourism and investor confidence. As the government continues to prioritize stability and cooperation with neighboring Guinea, the resolution of the Yenga dispute remains a key focus in its diplomatic efforts.
