A high-profile delegation from the Taiwan-based Tzu Chi Humanitarian Organisation has commended Sierra Leone’s Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Karminty, for her unwavering commitment to supporting vulnerable communities.
The delegation’s courtesy visit, held on a public holiday, underscored the significance of humanitarian partnerships in addressing social challenges.
The visit aimed to assess the impact of rice donations facilitated through Caritas, with the Ministry of Social Welfare serving as the primary beneficiary. Last December, the ministry successfully distributed rice to vulnerable groups across Kono District and beyond, tackling urgent food security concerns.
Minister Karminty expressed profound appreciation for Tzu Chi’s continued assistance, emphasising the critical role of partnerships in alleviating poverty and hunger. “A hungry man is an angry man,” she remarked, highlighting the ministry’s commitment to providing essential relief for thousands, including the elderly, persons with disabilities, and street beggars.
The rice distribution program has proven to be a lifeline for many, especially women and children affected by gender-based violence. The initiative aligns with the government’s “Feed Salone” program, which seeks to enhance food security and improve living conditions for at-risk families. Beneficiaries have reported that savings from rice donations have allowed them to address other pressing needs, including healthcare and education.
Additionally, Minister Karminty underscored the initiative’s positive impact on rehabilitation efforts for over 500 victims of drug and substance abuse at the Hastings centre. Proper nutrition is essential to their recovery, as it is for children in orphanages and prisoners facing malnutrition-related health risks.
Debra Boudreaux, CEO of the Tzu Chi Humanitarian Organisation, lauded the minister’s dedication and called for a holistic approach to tackling food insecurity. She stressed the need for strategic government partnerships with local organizations to improve sanitation, health, and overall community well-being.
The meeting concluded with Minister Karminty reaffirming her commitment to spearheading coordinated efforts for better waste management and public health. Strengthening collaboration between Tzu Chi, Caritas, and the Ministry of Social Welfare, she vowed to continue championing initiatives that uplift the most vulnerable members of society.
