Dr. Fatima Bio Elected President of African First Ladies

Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, has been elected as the President of the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), marking a historic milestone for Sierra Leone.

This is the first time a Sierra Leonean First Lady has ascended to this prestigious leadership position, further amplifying the country’s diplomatic influence and commitment to development on the continental stage.

Dr. Fatima Bio’s election reflects her unwavering dedication to championing women’s empowerment, healthcare, and education across Africa. As OAFLAD President, she is poised to lead collaborative efforts among First Ladies to drive impactful policies and initiatives that enhance the well-being of women and children throughout the continent.

In her acceptance statement, Dr. Bio expressed deep gratitude to her fellow First Ladies for their trust in her leadership.

“I am honored to announce that I have been elected to serve as the President of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), an esteemed organization comprising First Ladies from across Africa. This role is not only a privilege but also a profound responsibility that I embrace with enthusiasm,” she stated.

She extended appreciation to all Sierra Leoneans for their support, acknowledging their role in her journey.

“I also want to express my sincere appreciation to all Sierra Leoneans, both at home and abroad, for granting my husband the opportunity to serve our nation. Your trust and support are invaluable.”

Dr. Bio also paid tribute to her husband, President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, describing him as a true champion of gender equality.

“Lastly, I would like to thank my He-for-She President, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, for empowering me and providing a platform that allows me to champion the cause of women and girls in Sierra Leone and beyond. Together, we will work tirelessly to uplift our communities and advocate for positive change.”

Her leadership at OAFLAD is expected to usher in a new era of advocacy and action, reinforcing Africa’s commitment to gender equality and sustainable development.
