Authorities in Bo District are ramping up efforts to contain the spread of Mpox after confirming the fourth case in Sierra Leone. During a high-level meeting in Bo City, District Medical Officer (DMO) Dr. Amara Steven Ngegbai updated Resident Minister South, Chief John Abu, on the outbreak and ongoing containment measures.
The latest case involves a seven-year-old boy from Valunia Chiefdom who tested positive after receiving treatment at the Lion Heart Medical Center in Tonkolili District. As a precaution, 17 individuals from the boy’s community are under self-quarantine and are being monitored for the 21-day incubation period. Dr. Ngegbai explained that these individuals are being closely observed for symptoms by the health team.
In response to the outbreak, a seven-bed isolation unit has been set up at Bo Government Hospital, staffed by trained professionals to manage suspected cases. Dr. Ngegbai noted that while Mpox is less severe than diseases such as Ebola and COVID-19, the health team is taking all necessary precautions to prevent further transmission. He emphasised the commitment to protecting lives and assured that the isolation unit is adequately equipped and staffed.
Public awareness campaigns are also underway, focusing on educating residents about Mpox symptoms, modes of transmission, and prevention methods. Messages are being disseminated through radio and television, with particular emphasis on communities in Valunia Chiefdom and surrounding areas. Dr. Ngegbai appealed to media outlets to expand these efforts to remote regions, stressing that public awareness is critical to controlling the outbreak.
Despite the proactive measures, Dr. Ngegbai highlighted resource challenges, stating that while some medical supplies are available, additional support would significantly enhance the district’s capacity to manage the situation.
Resident Minister South, Chief John Abu, commended the health team’s prompt and coordinated response. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to public health and assured that every effort would be made to support containment strategies. He urged the public to adhere to health guidelines and to report any suspected cases promptly.
The minister also called for greater collaboration among traditional leaders, community stakeholders, and residents, emphasising that collective action is essential in combating the outbreak. He reiterated the importance of unity in protecting vulnerable populations and preventing further spread of the disease.
With strengthened medical infrastructure, extensive public education efforts, and collaborative support from all stakeholders, Bo District is demonstrating its determination to contain the Mpox outbreak. Authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to safeguard lives and maintain public safety.
