In a significant move to enhance public safety, the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has commenced the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in key locations across Freetown.
This initiative aims to address growing concerns over crime and public disorder by providing real-time surveillance and strengthening law enforcement capabilities.
The project focuses on high-traffic areas, crime-prone neighborhoods, and critical public spaces, enabling 24/7 monitoring of the city. These cameras are expected to play a vital role in crime detection, prevention, and evidence gathering for investigations, marking a step forward in modernizing Freetown’s security infrastructure.
Authorities see the CCTV network as a dual-purpose tool, deterring criminal activities while fostering a sense of accountability within the community. By equipping law enforcement with advanced monitoring tools, the initiative seeks to create a safer and more secure environment for residents and visitors alike.
The SLP has indicated that the effectiveness of the CCTV system would be regularly reviewed, with adjustments made as necessary to ensure its impact. The collaboration between law enforcement, government agencies, and the public will be critical to the long-term success of this initiative.
The pilot phase comprised of 30 CCTV cameras being installed in strategic places in Freetown. This initiative was assured to be cascaded in other parts of the country ensuring nationwide safety and accountability while reducing crime scenes.
This development highlights Freetown’s commitment to tackling urban crime and improving the overall quality of life in the capital, reinforcing its position as a progressive and secure city.
