The Deputy Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Sierra Leone, Emilio Rossetti, and Team Leader Els Mortier has paid a high-profile courtesy call on the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, on Tuesday, November 26, 2025, where they lauded the Sixth Parliament for its legislative milestone, mostly the landmark “Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2024.”
Celebrating Legislative Progress
Emilio Rossetti commended Speaker Thomas and the Parliament for their commitment to enacting transformative laws. He also highlighted the recent ratification of two Financing Agreements from the EU, which will bolster Sierra Leone’s development initiatives. Rossetti revealed plans for an upcoming Apolitical Dialogue between the EU and the Government of Sierra Leone, set for December 10, 2024. President Julius Maada Bio is expected to inaugurate the dialogue, which will focus on critical issues such as human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.
“The dialogue aligns with the legal framework of the Samao Agreement, the successor to the Cotonou Agreement,” Rossetti noted, underscoring its importance to fostering robust governance. He also expressed optimism about Sierra Leone’s growing business environment, hinting at ongoing consultations with EU investors interested in the country’s economic potential.
Reaffirming Developmental Partnership
Els Mortier, the EU Team Leader, praised Parliament’s role in supporting the EU’s developmental programs across Sierra Leone. She reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to strengthening the institution through technical and financial support, noting that the partnership has been pivotal in advancing Sierra Leone’s progress.
“We value our collaboration with Parliament and remain dedicated to supporting Sierra Leone’s governance and development aspirations,” Mortier stated.
Speaker Thomas warmly welcomed the EU delegation, expressing profound gratitude for the European Union’s longstanding contributions to Sierra Leone. He particularly highlighted the EU’s role in budgetary support, grants, and technical assistance to Parliament.
“We deeply appreciate your contributions and assure you that all financing agreements from the EU will receive swift ratification,” the Speaker affirmed.
Speaker Thomas concluded by encouraging the EU team to continue engaging with Parliament, emphasizing that their partnership remains a cornerstone of Sierra Leone’s democratic and developmental ambitions.
With the foundation laid for the December dialogue, both parties reaffirmed their shared commitment to fostering human rights, democracy, and sustainable growth in Sierra Leone.
